Public Lecture
Health systems are entering a critical turning point. As populations age, the number of elderly and multimorbid patients is rising – while many health professionals are retiring. This public lecture will explore how data and modelling can be used to predict how diseases will accumulate in the population, how this will affect the demand for health services, and how the health workforce may change in the coming years. By identifying leverage points and opportunities for early prevention and smarter resource planning, the lecture will shed light on how health systems can stay resilient and ready for the future.
Peter Klimek (Complexity Science Hub, Vienna) is one of the leading researchers in the field of complexity and the director of the Supply Chain Intelligence Institute Austria (ASCII). He is also an associate professor at MedUni Vienna and a faculty member of the Complexity Science Hub Vienna, where he and his team conducted key modeling studies for Austria during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, Klimek emerged as one of the country’s most renowned COVID-19 experts and was named “Scientist of the Year” in 2021. Klimek serves on numerous scientific advisory boards and has received multiple awards for his work at the intersection of science and society. He is the author of more than 120 scientific publications and a textbook on complex systems. His research combines methods from network analysis, economics, and data science to highlight risks, interdependencies, and vulnerabilities in global supply chains, supply networks, and healthcare systems. Since March 2023, he has headed ASCII, where he develops data-driven models for analyzing global supply chains as well as production and supply networks in order to make them more resilient and sustainable.
