As part of the Vienna Design Week 2019 (27.09.2019 to 06.10.2019), the EU-funded (Horizon 2020) COLIBRI project HIVEOPOLIS presents new ideas for forms and materials for the bee-hive of the future. The installation presents novel bee-hive forms that not only consider the needs of beekeepers, but also take into account the needs of the animals. Besides the design itself, the installation also presents alternative, more ecologically-valuable and naturally-degradable materials that can replace petroleum-based materials that are currently widely used in beekeeping. These materials can play active roles for the hive, for example by positively impacting the in-hive climate. For this purpose various such materials and processes of manufacturing these are presented. The installation thus combines the interests of humans and animals, and shows novel insights from material design, production methods, architecture and biology and thus constitutes a core example of a COLIBRI initiative.
