Network

World’s most innovative institutions are analogous to symbioses in nature: successful by teaming up experts of different disciplines. When establishing these symbiotic networks, one starts at local level, but has to subsequently enlarge them on regional, national, and finaly, international level.

At the University of Graz, i.e. at local level, COLIBRI -- Complexity of Life in Basic Research and Innovation is such an interdisciplinary initiative for the research of complex systems with focus on the complexity of living systems. Grasping these complexities necessitates a transdisciplinary approach. In consequence, we integrate joint research of several institutes across 4 faculties:

The Province of Styria hosts 5 universities, 2 universities of applied sciences, 2 colleges of education, and several renowned research and technology organizations, which are the basis for the excellent reputation of Styria as a research location. According to "Statistik Austria", 2019, Styria has gained a top position in the ranking of researching regions, having a research and development quota of 4.91% of the gross domestic product (GDP),  and a prominent presence in major research networks. But, this is not only due to the effort of  all these research institutions. One of the secrets is also  the excellent cooperation between science and industry. The cooperation of companies with universities, universities of applied sciences and non-university research institutions is excellent in Styria. Having a look at Austria, for 2019, "Statistik Austria" predicts expenditures of 12.8 billion euros for research and development, which corresponds to a research quota of 3.19% of the GDP. The expected increase of 4.5% compared to the previous year is higher than the expected growth of the GDP of 3.8%.

Also for the COLIBRI initiative, this provides a fertile soil for establsihing cooperative research endevours on regional and national level. In the follwowing we list regional and national partners, collaborating with us in research projects within COLIBRI:
