Martin Stefanec
In 2023, Martin Stefanec completed his Ph.D. with a dissertation on self-organization in natural and nature-inspired systems. His research focused on the honeybee, investigating three levels of organization within the honeybee superorganism: the queen/court system essential for colony growth, communication dynamics on the honeycomb dance floor, and structural organization during winter clustering. His approach integrated experimental setups and technological elements into the bees' environment to develop a biohybrid system that allows information exchange between biological and technological components. In addition, he extended the Primordial Particle System to study the emergence of complex structures from simple rules of motion. The dissertation compared these systems to understand organization across levels, and studied emergent phenomena at the interfaces of these levels to assess their properties and behaviors.
